Level 2 – Basic digital awareness: beyond the first steps
The lights and shadows of your profile: your first armor is built, but it needs reinforcing — beware of false security
Basic digital awareness is Level 2 of the Cyber Welfare Awareness Model: you have officially left the total darkness behind. You have understood something fundamental: the digital world is not just a game or a tool, but an ecosystem with its own rules and risks. You have started building your first “armor”, but it is still a light protection, to be reinforced with new knowledge. This is the time of active curiosity.
What you will find in this section
- Your lights: you understand that passwords are fundamental, you browse and use email with ease, you know threats exist.
- Your shadows: you don’t yet know two-factor authentication (MFA) and you might not recognize deception techniques such as phishing.
- Still-passive defenses: you know viruses and attacks exist, but you don’t yet know how to defend yourself actively.
- The trap of false security: the greatest danger at this level is thinking you are “all set” just because you know the basics.
- Active curiosity: the lever for growth: asking yourself questions about the real implications of your online actions.
Lights and Shadows of your current profile
At Level 2, your situation is characterized by a mix of consolidated knowledge and areas still to be explored:
| What you already know (Lights) | What remains to be discovered (Shadows) |
| You understand that passwords are fundamental. | You are not yet familiar with two-factor authentication (MFA) or password managers. |
| You can navigate the Internet and send emails with ease. | You might not recognize deception techniques like phishing (fake emails or sites). |
| You are aware that online threats exist. | You don’t yet know exactly how to actively defend yourself from viruses or targeted attacks. |
Why this section: the Cyber Welfare method
In the Awareness Model, the Basic level indicates an initial acquired awareness: a general understanding of the digital environment and its risks, the operational basics — using a PC, browsing, email — and the intuition that security matters. It is a real milestone, not a finish line: the tools to interpret danger signals are still missing. In the Cyber Welfare Framework, it corresponds to the Awareness dimension of level FL2.
Who it is for
People who have already taken their first steps and know the web carries risks, people who use email and online services every day but feel they don’t yet have all the tools to evaluate them, and anyone who wants to understand the “shadows” of their profile before they become a problem.
Requirements and details
To progress to Level 3 (Intermediate), turn curiosity into knowledge: discover two-factor authentication and enable it on your accounts, learn to recognize the signals of phishing and dig deeper into how to actively defend yourself from viruses and attacks. The Self-Assessment shows you which shadows to explore first.
Frequently asked questions
What does having basic digital awareness mean?
It means you have understood that the digital world has its own rules and risks: you know the basics, browse with ease and sense the importance of security, but some deception and defense techniques are still to be discovered.
What is the trap of false security?
It is the greatest danger of Level 2: thinking you are “all set” just because you know the basics. Protection at this stage is still light, and perceived security can exceed real security.
How do I move from Level 2 to Level 3?
Through active curiosity: enable two-factor authentication, learn to recognize phishing and explore the real implications of your online actions. The Self-Assessment shows you the priorities.
Take the Self-Assessment and discover the lights and shadows of your profile: it is the best way to reinforce your armor without falling into false security.
