Level 1: Unaware – Beyond the Digital Fog
Being at the Unaware level means moving through the digital world without a map or compass. It is not a fault: it is simply the point where our knowledge of web mechanisms is still at the starting blocks. In this phase, one is not aware of what they do not know, unintentionally leaving the door open to risks that they cannot yet see.
It is the “digital fog” phase: we move between sites, apps, and messages, ignoring the invisible dangers lurking behind a click, but also the great opportunities that safe browsing can offer.
What is “Unaware” Awareness?
It indicates a nearly non-existent level of knowledge regarding the dangers and opportunities of the digital world. A person at this level:
- Does not know the fundamental concepts of the network.
- Ignores the existence of common threats.
- Does not understand the value of their own privacy and data.
Signs of Level 1
What does it mean, in practice, to be in this phase? Here are some concrete examples:
- IT Mysteries: Not knowing what a computer virus is or how it can damage your devices.
- Account Vulnerability: Having no idea how to create a strong password or why it is dangerous to use a simple one (like “123456”).
- Exposed Identity: Not realizing that publishing your phone number or address everywhere can have real consequences.
- Navigation in the Dark: Clicking on any link or attachment without wondering where it came from or who sent it.
Why is it essential to turn on the light?
Staying in this state is risky because it makes us an easy target for scammers and malicious software. However, the transition from the “Unaware” level to the “Basic” level is the most exciting: it is the moment when you finally begin to see the digital world for what it really is, learning to distinguish a safe path from a trap.
How to start waking up your awareness
The secret is curiosity. Here are three small steps to start clearing the fog:
- Ask yourself questions: Always ask yourself: “Why is this site asking for my email?” or “Why does this link seem too good to be true?”.
- Learn the basic terms: Start discovering what words like Phishing, Malware, and Privacy mean.
- Observe your devices: Look at the icons on your screen: do you know what they all do? Would you know how to protect them?
